Swamp Bats Summer A season in the New England Collegiate Baseball League eBook Jessica Berthiaume Kellie "Doc" Gordon

I wasn't going to review this book, but Amazon asked my opinion.

There are a couple of books on life in the summer collegiate baseball leagues -- Jim Collins' THE LAST BEST LEAGUE (on the Cape Cod League) and Austin Gisriel's SAFE AT HOME (on the Valley League) come quickly to mind. I had finished Collins' book and found this one, on the New England league, so I gave it a try.

For people who live in the Keene community, who played for the team or have links with the team, this book may suffice. There are good ideas here, the photography is lovely, and I see that its heart is in the right place.

What I found was a deeply flawed book that I cannot recommend.

SWAMP BATS SUMMER has three problems -- narrative, editing, and presentation. It fails at all three.

The book is about one season in a summer collegiate baseball league -- college players, small town, big dreams. There are stories that can be told there. Collins and Gisriel do. Here, Marc Ryan never seems to find a story. He lets his brief recaps of the Swamp Bats' games carry his book, and he intersperses them with vignettes about players or volunteers, but we never stay with any of these characters and we never see how they develop or what this summer means to anyone. The result is something curiously superficial that reads like a series of unedited blog posts.

Which brings me to the editing -- it's non-existent. This book badly needed a copy-edit. With its mangled sentences and butchered punctuation, this book was a chore to read, and my inner editor cried out in pain many times.

Finally, the presentation. This is a badly formatted ebook. It's divided into chapters, but the chapter divisions don't work. Plus, it commits what I consider a cardinal sin of ebooks -- the text is presented web-style instead of book-style with paragraphs double-spaced instead of indented.

The germ of the idea of this book was good. Sadly, the execution wasn't there. SWAMP BATS SUMMER needed a rewrite to add meat to its meager bones and find the story in the midst of the Swamp Bats' forty-odd games. Then it needed a copy-edit and formatting to bring it up to snuff.

I can't recommend this.

I love the Swamp Bats. Baseball at its finest and funnest. Well written, and a delight to read. The images are terrific, too. It's about the game and the players and all the joy they bring to the fans. I loved every minute of it.
